Niche Rivalry 002: My Niche Website Content Strategy

by J. on January 14, 2012

I have to admit – I’m terrible at planning and my niche website content strategy is no exception.  I usually just push forward with something and adjust on the fly.  So when I started writing posts for my niche site, I didn’t really have any sort of structure in mind, but over the past week I think I’ve come up with a good content structure that I’m going to go with.

My Niche Website Content Structure

Basically, I’m going to use the “Must Have Kitchen Gadget” thing to target general terms for various products like my first post about the “home deep fryer.”  These posts will be more social in nature I guess – kind of superficial and more for entertainment than information.  They’ll be numbered and have their own little category so someone can come to the site and check out the list of must have gadgets – it’s going to be the site’s hook.

These posts will link down to the specific product that I recommend.  These posts will be extremely targeted, sometimes down to the model number.  They’ll be a basic overview of the product, and why I think that’s the best one of the bunch.

I’ll always link down to the most specific product pages because they convert better and I want them to have the most authority and to have traffic funneling down to them.

With all of these posts, I try to work in 5-10 variations of the keyword, and I try to get those into headings when it makes sense and looks natural.  You’ve probably noticed that I’m doing the same thing on this site here.

How I’ve Come Up With The Ideas for My Website Content So Far

I watch too much TV, and it’s usually late at night.  I’ve just been adding posts about things I’ve seen on TV in the past week.  Except the deep fryer.  I’m serious about that thing, you need one.  But the (probably sad) thing is, I really do look at just about all of these products and think – wow, that’s pretty cool – someone is going to love that.  So, at least my excitement about the products on the niche site is rather genuine.

My Website Content Analysis Techniques

I’ve actually done very little competitive analysis so far.  I see a product, do some keyword research, find one that I think is long tail enough that I can at least get to page 1 or 2 pretty easily, and then use that as the main keyword.  Then I pepper in the variations I mentioned above, and that’s about it.  I should probably do a little more analysis of the sites in the top 10, but I’ve found a lot of the keyword analysis being done out there is a waste of time.  I always end up ranking for random things I didn’t think of that turn out to be goldmines, or ranking for things that I supposedly shouldn’t be able to, and I wasn’t even really trying because I thought I couldn’t rank for the term.

The most useful thing I do is a search for the keyword in quotes in Google – “deep fryers”, and find one that has a good balance of a decent search volume, and few exact results using that search.  It’s nothing new, and it’s not rocket science. It’s cheap & easy; just the way I like ‘em.

Some More Niche Website Content Ideas

Another type of content I’m going to create for some more internal linking opportunities are posts like recipes, and cooking tips and tricks, and stuff along those lines.  These will point towards the money product posts.  I’m not sure if this will “dilute” the authority for gadgets.  I think a lot of that laser focus domain nonsense is overblown, but I guess we’ll see.

Also, things like recipes have the potential to improve user metrics because – what do people do with recipes they find online?  They 1) bookmark them & 2) leave them open on their laptops while they’re cooking – at least I do.  Maybe this will improve time on site, which may or may not affect rankings depending on whatever recent drivel you’ve read about SEO.

For the social side of things, I already have some content ideas for things like  ”Top 10 – whatever” lists.  Social media eats that stuff up.  Social media may not convert, but it could bring some link love.

My Niche Website Content Plan In a Nutshell

  • General “Must Have” posts linking down to…
  • Very specific product posts
  • Side content – recipes and stuff – to build more internal links & improve user metrics
  • Top 10 lists and other link bait for social media fodder

I think that’s about it for my niche website content strategy.  I really haven’t done anything quite like this before (content structure wise), so it should be fun to see the results.
